The story of the people of Afisia—from their lost homeland to a new beginning. A journey of memory that continues to this day
In October 1922, the threat of annihilation forced approximately 250 Afisian families to leave their homeland. They were hastily transported by ship to Lavrio. When the compulsory population exchange was decided, nearly half of the families chose to build a new homeland.

From Afisia to USA
From 1904 onward, the dream of a better life led many people from Afisia to America. For many of them, that journey became a permanent destination, and they never returned home
From Afisia to Lavrio
Not everyone followed the path of exile for a second time. Some chose to remain in Lavrio, where they built a new life
From Afisia to Neos Pyrgos
Several families who had remained in Lavrio later attempted to settle in Sarti, but by then it was too late. As a result, they eventually settled in Neos Pyrgos, on the island of Euboea
Other families found new homes in various parts of Greece (Komotini, Edessa, Thessaloniki), while others continued their journey even farther, leaving descendants in every corner of the world (United States, Australia, France, Germany)
